5 LOVELY SPOTS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA
Like many people, on Fridays, I always think of fun things to do over the weekend to make it memorable. This weekend I have decided to share some amazing spots you can visit for a different dose of fun.
If you live in busy cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Portharcourt, weekend getaways to other parts of the country are usually difficult. But it is during these weekends that the best memories are sometimes made. Do you even have plans for the weekend, or will it still be work work work?
Let’s talk a bit about the part of the country I am proposing that you visit in this post – Northern Nigeria. I was born in Gusau, and have lived most of my life in the north, plus, I enjoy the culture. Many people call me Arewa girl because of how nurture has made me into a multi-cultural female. For most Nigerians who have never visited this part, it is scary. With all the news and tales coming out of here, who could blame you?
Having been to almost every (except 6) states, I can confidently say that northern Nigeria holds its intrigues as one of the calmest and livable parts of Nigeria. I am not downplaying the insurgency and crisis. I am only saying that amidst all these, there is still so much beauty to enjoy here.

I first saw this castle in Wishlist video by LeriQ featuring Wande Coal. At that time, I had lived in Kaduna for 2 years, but never heard about the place. Then I visited and was blown away. At first sight, the castle looks like a piece (from the medieval age) dropped on a piece of land in Kaduna.
The castle is surely an architectural masterpiece, designed to be exclusive and provide luxury during your stay. The elevated peaks with breath-taking views are all you need to put you in the right mood for a memorable weekend.
Taraba qualifies as one of the most beautiful (as far as landscape is concerned) states in Nigeria. No wonder it is called the “nation’s gift to the nation.” The state is characterized by undulating landscapes, with a couple of mountainous features, making it one of my favourite destinations.
The Mambilla plateau is Nigeria’s northern continuation of the Bamenda Highlands of Cameroon. It is a combination of mountains, hills, and waterfalls, producing an impressive sight, that always leaves sweet memories.
This waterfall gushes with a width of 200 meters and a height of 30meters. It is a sight to behold. If you ever visit Abuja or Niger state, DO NOT miss the opportunity to stop by at the Gurara waterfall.
Interestingly, this waterfall is named by the Gwari people after two of their deities – Gura and Rara. If you have seen the people of the Gwari tribe (known to carry loads on their back, not head), a trip to the Gurara waterfall will fix that.
- SHERE HILLS – Jos
The Shere hill is a favourite destination for many hikers. It is both scenic and provides for a good adventure during hiking. The hills stand at 6,001 feet above sea level, making it the third-highest point in Nigeria, with Chappal Waddi and Mount Dimlang as first and second respectively. Enjoy a beautiful weekend hiking in Jos.
If you are someone who loves cultural preservation, you should visit the Sukur Kingdom in Adamawa state. This site is very special (over 500 years old), and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is located on a hill above the Sukur (a village in Madagali LGA). Despite the insurgency, a lot of tourists still visit this site.
My list will be incomplete without the Fifth Chukker Resort in Kaduna. A visit to Fifth Chukker is always memorable. It is always a spot for exotic experiences. In addition to the many facilities available in the resort, you can play Polo.
