VOLUNTEER STORY #1

As you all know, I am addicted to Volunteerism. So last year 2018, as a way of keying into the International Volunteers Day (IVD) theme – VOLUNTEERS BUILD RESILIENT COMMUNITIES, I launched my Volunteers’ Story Project (VSP).

This project is a collation of the volunteer experiences and stories of volunteers across the world who are doing so many great things.

What do you do?

I am an undergraduate student of Public Administration at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Nigeria.

When did you start volunteering?

My first volunteer experience was on the 5th of December 2018, which was coincidentally the World Volunteers Day. I volunteered for the Kaduna State Peace Commission’s event geared at promoting violence-free elections in Kaduna state.

Why did you start volunteering?

At some point in 2018, I decided I wanted to give something back to community. There is no better to do that as a young person than by  volunteering, so I volunteered.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?

I have had only one volunteer experience and the favorite part was the fact that I gained exposure, experience and learnt new skills as I worked with other Volunteers towards the success of the program. I also enjoyed meeting new people and broadening my network. And least I forget, I gained confidence in the process.

What would you say to prospective Volunteers?

Whether you are just starting out or you have been volunteering for years, take stock of what you are doing.
